SYLLABUS
Mrs. King Spanish (Fall 2001 - Spring 2002)
In today's world, Spanish is the second most widely used language in the United States. World language study enables you, the student, to learn how to communicate in Spanish, explore the cultures of the Hispanic World, and make significant comparisons of the many different ways to view the world. You will use the five goals of world language study set forth for the 21st century:
Communication: speaking, reading, writing and listening Culture: "what to do when and where" Connections: various realms of study Comparisons: different ways to view the world Communities: participation in multilingual communities
EVALUATION:
To monitor your progress throughout the year, I will design varied assessment tools, including peer and portfolio assessment. The diverse assessment and teaching tools to be practiced include the following: written assignments, classroom activities (oral drills, dialogues, interviews, cooperative learning activities, films, videos, Mexican/Spanish news, audio tapes, and games), Spanish journal writing, quizzes (announced and unannounced), oral/aural/written tests and, special projects (organized notebook, research project, exposition of a text, and preparation of and maintenance of a portfolio). All activities are scored on a 100% scale, which is distributed as follows:
Classroom participation 25% Homework 25% Quizzes and Tests 25% Portfolio 25% (Portfolio-to be completed in June) (Journal-advanced levels)
You will have the opportunity to maintain the progress of your portfolio, a well-designed collection of significant samples of your work throughout the year. Portfolios provide realistic and authentic assessment because you will understand the criteria for evaluation and reflect on your progress throughout the year. The portfolio will be sent home periodically to provide your parents/guardians with a clearer understanding of your accomplishments and skill development. In addition, they will be available for viewing during Open House.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: In addition to the rules and regulations in the student handbook, every student must abide by the following rules in my classroom:
Have MUTUAL RESPECT (for your teacher, peers, materials, classroom and yourself). Be ATTENTIVE and PREPARED for each class! Everyday bring to class your homework, readings, text(s), Spanish pocket dictionary, pen/pencil/highlighter, and notebook. LISTEN CAREFULLY to your peers and teacher whenever they are speaking. ARRIVE ON TIME to class and AVOID EXCESSIVE ABSENTEEISM. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask what work/quiz/test is to be made up on the day that you return to school. Use bathroom/drinking fountain BEFORE Spanish class. NO CHEWING GUM, FOOD OR DRINK IS PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM!!
